Partner Q&A: Behind the scenes with Giorgio Marcolongo
26 October 2018
Worldwide Board Member and EMEA Chair Giorgio Marcolongo explains what motivates him, the best career advice he ever received, and just as importantly, what he does when not working.
What do you love most about your job?
I mostly like when I perceive the impact that my job, my professional advice, has on our client’s business decisions.
What is one piece of advice that would you give to someone who was looking at starting out in your industry?
Start from the ground and collect as much experience as you can. Never be afraid to ask. It is better to make a stupid question than pretend to know the answer. Try to get the widest vision as you can, when taking a decision or giving advice to a client.
What would you do if you weren’t in your current role?
I would probably be a design architect, it was a dream in my drawer when I was young. I must say that the ability to design tailored solutions is something that an accountant is supposed to have.
Name three people you would invite to a dinner party (living or dead)
Leonardo Da Vinci, Roberto Benigni (the Italian comic actor) and Steve Jobs. All of them at same dinner.
What was your first job?
Sales assistant at a toy store. I can assure you that kids are the most demanding customer! An excellent training.
What motivates you?
Finding the way to solve problems, to design the simplest solution to our clients’ needs, even when starting from complex data.
If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you live?
At my home. I like to stay with my family and home is the best place to be. But I love travelling, so I’m able to feel at home almost anywhere in the world!
How do you start each morning?
A good cup of coffee, Italian style.
What’s the best piece of advice that you’ve received?
Not many, actually. I feel that any of the goals I reached in my life and career were the result of my efforts and mistakes too.
Be in contact with yourself, with what you are, aligned with your beliefs and don’t care much of what other people think of you. This was a good piece of advice my father gave me when I was young.
What is your favourite holiday destination and why?
I love the sea and any of the water sports. I would then say that two thirds of the globe are my favourite holiday destination.
Name one item that you can’t live without
My bike.
What is the number one problem Alliott Group solves for your client
Provides professional expertise to all our clients with multi-jurisdictional needs.
What would say to a firm that is considering whether to join Alliott Group or a different international group?
For a firm serving mid-market businesses with international needs, I would say that Alliott Group represents a good chance to reach access to key business markets, develop relationships and create new business opportunities.
Describe Alliott Group in as few words as possible!
A business elevator.
