Emerging Talent Q&A: Angela O'Neill

As part of our focus on the younger professionals working at Alliott Group member firms, we recently caught up with Angela O'Neill, an associate at Brisbane law member Broadley Rees Hogan and asked her to tell us more about why chose a career in law and what motivates her. 

1. Position title

I am an an Associate at the firm. 

2. Why did you choose this as your career?

Like a lot of lawyers (whether they admit it or not), it probably started with a TV show. Then high school legal studies and a school-based traineeship in a busy law firm brought me back down to earth and showed me some of the key elements of a career in law that appealed to me – people skills, problem solving, attention to detail and continuous learning.

3. What is the best part of your job?

Variety. No client, no circumstance or legal issue is ever the same. Each comes with its own unique challenges, lessons and opportunities to help our clients and develop different skills.

4. What is your firm’s difference in your opinion?

Its people. Broadley Rees Hogan’s people have different qualities, experiences and specialties but they all come together to work as a team to give our clients commercial, pragmatic and technically astute advice.

5. What do you consider your greatest achievement to date?

Finishing a law degree while working full time as a litigation paralegal tops the list!

6. What motivates you?

Professionally, putting myself in my client’s shoes helps me to focus on what I would expect and how I would like to be treated as a client and drives me to meet those standards. Personally, by reminding myself of what I want to achieve and why I stay focused on my goals.

7. Name one item you cannot do without?

My phone, because it allows me to take and share photos of my cat, Penny, at a moment’s notice. Also, my cat.

8. Are you a member of any commerce, cultural or community organisations?

I am a member of the Queensland Law Society which offers learning and networking opportunities as well as valuable feedback on legislative changes that impact Queenslanders.

9. What is one thing you would like to see Alliott Group implement?

More cross-border networking and learning opportunities for early-career professionals.
